"Beast Mode" or "Least Mode"? - My Picks

Yes, the Super Bowl ads rule Social Media, too!  28 million tweets, 65 million FB posts, and 4 million hours watching youtube videos.  It's a new day, indeed. I mean #newdayinadvertising

Snorgrass’ Under-Achievers

1.    Toyota – “How Great I Am” http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/toyota-camry-amy-purdy-muhammad-ali-super-bowl-commercial/  Comments: how could you waste a great speech by Ali and the imagery of Paralympic Amy Purdy? Waste their greatness on a not so great product, the Camry --- it’s just not believable! Poor match-making.

2.    Carnival Cruises – “Return to the Sea” http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/carnival-cruise-jfk-super-bowl-commercial/  Comment: Here is another waste of a great JFK voice over.  JFK’s brand was sail boating not cruises.  I just don’t see him at Kennebunkport on a cruise ship – imagery just doesn’t fit!

3.    Always – “Like a Girl” http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/like-a-girl-always-super-bowl-commercial/  Comment: How could you ever have a ‘like a girl’ spot and not include Mo’ne Davis of Little League fame!  Major oversight!

Snorgrass’  Top 5 + 1

1.    Dodge –“ Wisdom”  http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/dodge-100-super-bowl-commercial/ Comment: Listen and learn from your Elders!

2.    Mophie – “All Powerless” http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/mophie-phone-charger-super-bowl/ Comment:  Yes, it’s pretty daring to suggest that God could be an African American male!

3.    Weight Watchers – “All You Can Eat” http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/weight-watchers-junk-food-super-bowl/  Comment: This one has a deeper message as it mocks the epitome of advertising’s impact on society and how it may negatively push consumerism as the ultimate tool of sustainable happiness!  More is not always best.

4.    Doritos – “Middle Seat” http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/doritos-middle-seat-super-bowl-commercial/  Comment: Nothing like a Little Humor.

5.    Doritos – “When Pigs Fly”  http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/doritos-pigs-fly-super-bowl-commercial/  Comment: Ditto.

6.    Fiat – “Blue Pill” http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/toyota-camry-amy-purdy-muhammad-ali-super-bowl-commercial/  Comment: Humorous and it looks like Viagra got a free ride on this one! Co-branding at its best.

Snorgrass’ Honorable Mention

1 . KC Royals – “Forever Royal” by local KC firm Waltz Tetrick. http://fox4kc.com/2015/02/02/royals-reveal-slogan-for-2015-season-during-super-bowl/  Comment: Well Done!  Love the AR!

  1. Dr. Snorgrass,
I'm with you on the Carnival Cruises commercial because I hated that one the most! It literally almost bored me to death. I don't think you gave the "Like a Girl" commercial enough credit; it was super well thought out! I didn't really care for the Dodge commercial. I did love the "All Powerless" commercial especially because they made Jesus Black which I really appreciated! I'm disappointed in you for picking the "When Pigs Fly" Doritos commercial because I'm pretty sure Red Bull did the same type of concept a few years ago. You say if you're going to steal you have to do it better, and I'm not sure they did. Plus, I think the whole "when pigs fly" Cliché is too played out at this point. Fiat was awesome opossum.

  2. I'm also super surprised you didn't mention the Nationwide commercial about the risk of childhood accidents. I thought they did a great job of capturing the attention of viewers especially since most people have kids. I don't even have kids and it made my stomach nauseous just watching it. The last thing I want to mention is that funnier commercials always appeal to me more than anything else, and I feel like Superbowl commercials are changing their focus from humor to heartfelt. There were so many heartfelt commercials I wanting to puke. With that and all of the car commercials, I was pretty much disappointed with the totality of the commercials this year. Everyone thought the Budweiser commercial was so great, but I was not impressed. I think when you make heartfelt commercials, it's kind of a cop out. Everyone loves puppies, so everyone is going to like the commercial regardless. Let's think of the Budweiser commercial though. What do puppies actually have to do with Clydesdales, I mean honestly. There were definitely too many heartfelt commercials, period.

I agree with you about Doge ad (Wisdom) and as you said," Listen and learn from your elders." Doge did a great job in associated it name with old people because they are known of the wisdom, right choices and experience and that what Doge is saying about it cars. Also, I like the Carnvial commercial; I didn't see the problem of using JFK's voice. Actually using JFK's voice will take the audiences attention. Also the speech was perfect for the ad. I kind of disagree with you too in "Like a girl" I believe it was effective and delivered a strong message even though Mo’ne Davis was not included. Finally, I agree with about Doritos commercial " when pigs fly" even though it sounds impassible, but that would made it more fun to me! the facial expression of the man, kid, and the pig were all fun. Also the idea that Diritos delivered to public that do the impassible to get a bite of doritos chips.

  4. I would agree with you on the Dodge- Wisdom commercial. It was humorous in a sense but yet very strong at the same time. Dodge really did well in catching attention and making a impression. I did not like the Always-Like A Girl commercial. Though I see what they were striving for and I think that they accomplished it, I just don't like the fact that it takes a tampon commercial to make such a strong statement and impression for people to become so thrilled over. Women should have that strength and power already inside them and not need a commercial to make that kind of statement for them. Little girls should not have to be inspired by a commercial but rather by their fathers, teachers, etc.
